Network Rail’s First Class Christmas fundraising for Barnardo’s

Release Date: 03 Jan 2018

Network Rail and Barnardo’s staff joined forces to raise thousands of pounds for the children’s charity just in time for Christmas.

Volunteers from both organisations took part in bucket collections, carolling and gift-wrapping sessions as part of the Christmas Collection Campaign at 10 stations around the UK in support of Barnardo’s, which is the Network Rail’s charity of choice until March 2019.

8 Network Rail managed stations: Glasgow Central, Manchester Piccadilly, Birmingham New Street, Leeds, London Bridge, London Victoria, London Kings Cross and London Paddington. Leicester and Derby stations also hosted volunteers.

Volunteers at Glasgow Central Station, London Victoria and London Waterloo also pulled on Santa hats for six days of free gift wrapping sessions inside a giant present-shaped pop-up stand.

A total of 907 gifts were wrapped for 533 happy travellers, who donated £820 between them for Barnardo’s.

There were also 10 bucket collections and carols at stations including Leeds, London Paddington, Manchester Piccadilly, Birmingham New Street, London Bridge, London Victoria and London King’s Cross throughout December.

In total, the rail operator’s festive fundraising raised £6,067  for Barnardo’s, which will go towards helping vulnerable children, young people, parents and carers across the UK.

Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan said:

This has been a great opportunity to raise a lot of money for Barnardo’s while having some festive fun at the same time.

We are so grateful for Network Rail’s support and to everyone who made a donation – we hope you were pleased with your gift wrapping!

It is donations and fundraisers like this which mean Barnardo’s can continue its vital work helping hundreds of thousands of children across the UK.
