Barnardo’s responds to Government consultation on Domestic Abuse

Release Date: 08 Mar 2018

Barnardo’s welcomes the Government consultation to look at new measures to tackle domestic abuse but is also calling for more child centred services.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan said:

Barnardo’s welcomes today’s Government consultation on Domestic Abuse, as our specialist UK-wide services see first-hand the serious long-term emotional effects domestic violence has on children.

We know that children and young people witnessing domestic abuse have a higher risk of being sexually exploited, showing harmful sexual behaviour and are more likely to be in an abusive relationship later in life.

We’re pleased the consultation will cover a broad range of issues, including the need for promoting positive relationships. However, as well as a focus on prevention, there must also be child centred services such as counselling to help children recover from and stop being the long term hidden victims of this abuse.

Listening to the views of children and families must be at the heart of the consultation to inform the response needed from Police, education and social care.
