Young Carers Schools Liaison Project

What we do

This project helps to develop awareness in primary and post primary schools throughout the Northern and Western Health and Social Care Trust areas. We develop awareness to teaching staff and pupils and provide longer term support for not only the current pupil population, but those to come in future. Barnardo’s supports schools to understand the needs of young carers and to put mechanisms in place to improve their educational experience and balance their caring responsibilities with their studies.
We do this by:
• Empowering staff to support and identify Young Carers in school.
• Increasing pupil knowledge of the needs of Young Carers and therefore reduce stigma.
• Providing staff with practical advice, guidance and resources on identifying a Young
Carer.
• Empowering Young Carers to self-identify and enable them to seek support and guidance
when needed.
• Sharing best practice with schools for how to provide support to pupils who
are managing a caring role alongside their education.
• Increasing Young Carers awareness of support services available to them i.e.
Barnardo’s Regional Young Carers service.
