Caern Pentland Way

What we do

Opened in 2019, Caern Pentland Way is a Residential unit for Children & Young People aged 16-21. We operate on behalf of Midlothian Council to provide placement for up to three young people (YP) with Learning Disabilities & Autism.

Our purpose is focused on the critical period when YP turn 16 and develop into adulthood. During this transitionary period many challenges and changes can occur with it crucial in the establishment of a successful placement once in adult services.

We aim to bridge this connection between children and adult services to ensure our residents experience a purposeful and empowering placement.

Our YP goals:

1: To be safe and be provided with routine, structure, boundaries, and predictability in a nurturing environment. This is achieved by having experienced and trained staff from diverse backgrounds.

2: Promote positive contact between Parents/carers. The support needs of YP with learning disabilities and autism between the ages of 16-21 can dramatically increase. A residential placement can meet these needs however it is imperative that this does not impact on family contact.

3: Emotional and physical health needs to be met. Staff are given training for a wide variety of support needs from health care to behavioural support.

4: Continue to achieve their learning potential. The impact of school finishing is important as YP between 16-21 can be struggle. Regular outings and the establishment of placements helps keep opportunities available.

5: To be encouraged to be active, present in the community and to have positive social interactions. We strive to achieve as much contact with the community as possible. Contact should be purposeful, meaningful, and manageable for the individual.

6: To actively and effectively communicate their views to influence the care service. We are a firmly committed child centered service, thus, Barnardo’s is committed to The Promise.
