Course summary

A one-day, interactive, online training course for participants in England and Wales who are new to safeguarding and child protection, or for those looking for a refresher on the essentials. The session draws on current information and research and uses a blend of delivery methods, including group work and discussion, to build participants’ knowledge and skills.

Aims

To equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills to feel competent and confident in the ‘4 R’s’ of safeguarding and child protection: recognising, responding, reporting and recording concerns.

Objectives

  • To identify the key legislation and guidance that underpins safeguarding and child protection practice in your nation.

  • Identify how the 4 R’s - recognising, responding, reporting, and recording concerns - apply to your role.

  • Recognise the range and nature of abuse and neglect, including identifying categories as well as potential signs and indicators for concern.

  • Identify how to respond appropriately to the needs of a child or adult making a disclosure, or to a colleague with a concern.

  • Know the process for reporting concerns in line with organisational procedure.

  • Understand the importance of recording relevant information, language and the voice of the child.

  • To be able to explain the importance of communication, information sharing, accountability and appropriate challenge in safeguarding.

  • Recognise the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion in relation to safeguarding and safe working environments.

  • Reflect on how personal values and bias can impact decision making and professional boundaries.
