Course summary

An interactive, evidence-based one-day training course that gives participants practical knowledge and strategies to work with fathers. It focuses on how to help fathers play an important and positive role in their children’s development.

Aims

To help participants adopt a father-inclusive approach that promotes effective engagement when working with fathers and male carers and ensure any potential risks are appropriately assessed and managed.

Objectives

  • To examine how attachment theory enhances our understanding of parent and child relationships.

  • Reflect on personal and cultural issues which shape perceptions of men and fathers.

  • Appreciate the importance of considering male carer’s roles in children’s care, and understand the importance of engaging men in assessments, considering the strengths they bring and any potential risks when providing care to a child.

  • Explore the importance of working with men in families, including the research and evidence on fathers’ impact on children.

  • Examine case studies, tools and best practice to develop an action plan for embedding father-inclusive practice in your service.
