Course summary

A one-day training session for professionals in Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or Deputy DSL roles. The session covers core safeguarding messages, explores current and emerging issues and outlines the key responsibilities of the DSL role.

Aims

To equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to carry out safeguarding responsibilities effectively and ensure robust safeguarding practices within their organisations.

Objectives

  • To develop a baseline knowledge of operational manager’s legal requirements and responsibilities with regards to safeguarding children under the Children Act, Working Together and local safeguarding arrangements. 

  • Know how to support and supervise practitioners to: increase the use of the Early Help and Request for Support process; make appropriate inter-agency referrals to Children’s Social Care; respond when safeguarding concerns for a child already known to Social Care escalate; raise concerns about another professional’s safeguarding practice; address disagreements with Social Workers’ assessment of risk; and participate effectively in Child Protection Conferences and other inter-agency processes.

  • Develop an awareness of specific lessons arising from reviews for supervisors and to consider how these insights should change organisational practice.
