Every child should be treated with fairness, dignity and respect
Under international law, the UK has a duty to offer asylum to people who flee their own countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution.
Families seeking asylum have fled wars or famines in search of a better life - and they have often faced poor health, poverty and hunger on their way to the UK. Despite their parents' best efforts, the children often suffer most and can be incredibly vulnerable.
At Barnardo's, we:
- run foster services for children and young people who arrive here on their own
- help children get the healthcare and schooling they need while they are in the UK
- give parents practical support, such as an interpreter
- give families clothes and food
Whether they reamian in the UK or not, we believe we should protect and help children seeking asylum and their families while they are going through the asylum process.
