Two girls running and laughing

Everyone deserves to have a good summer

Summer should be when memories are made. But let’s be real—it doesn’t look the same for everyone.

To children, summer is their playground. And to parents, it’s a juggle. But for families living in poverty, it’s survival. Without the safety net of school, parents face impossible choices every day. For children living in poverty, it’s a summer of hunger, loneliness, and missing out.

It does not have to be that way.

That’s why this summer we’re helping families living in poverty in little ways like stocking the fridge, and in big, exciting ways like days out to the beach and trips to the zoo.

The support we provide means that families living in poverty can escape the daily grind and have the experiences where magical childhood memories are made. We do this every single day, and we’ll do it for as long as we’re needed.

With your support, we can help turn long, difficult summers into joyful ones – filled with laughter, play, and the kind of memories every child deserves.

Ellie's story

Ellie* is a single mum from Swindon who, along with her children, Daniel* (10) and Violet* (14), has received support from the Barnardo’s Swindon and Wiltshire Phoenix Project. Struggling with the rising cost of living and health challenges, Ellie was able to access emergency food vouchers through Barnardo’s, providing a lifeline during the school holidays: “I was having sleepless nights worrying about how I was going to buy things. The support took so much weight off my mind.”

How to make and keep a healthy routine with your kids this summer

School holidays can feel like a welcome break for your children but letting go of their usual routine can also leave them feeling unsettled, leading sometimes to changes in their emotions and behaviour.

Why is limiting screen time for children and young people a good idea?

Technology is an important part of life; it helps children learn, connect, explore their interests, and relax. But being conscious of how much screen time your children have can help you make sure that they’re having a healthy balance of experiences.
