This evidence review explores research evidence on achieving successful adoptions for looked after children.

The evidence suggests that effective care planning involves skilled, timely assessments, along with thinking flexibly about the range of family types that can meet the needs of each child and listening to their views. With regards to sustaining adoptive placements, developing a comprehensive plan for support, building the confidence and resilience of foster carers, and providing ongoing and reliable support are identified as important.
