Based on interviews with 75 young people supported by Barnardo’s, and interviews with project workers and managers, this research shows young people who have a difficult time in school often leave with minimal qualifications, limiting the opportunities available to them.

Some young people face specific barriers to continuing in education or finding work, such as having a baby or becoming homeless. Flexibility, building relationships with project workers, and focusing on young people’s strengths are identified as valuable in service provision.
