Based on observations of prison visits, focus groups and interviews with 28 young people (aged 5-18) visiting their fathers in prison, this research shows that making small changes to certain policies and practices can improve families’ visitation experiences.

Introducing a family intervention approach, making searches of children more child-friendly, simplifying visitation, setting a national standard for play and visitor facilities, and permitting children to bring homework and books into and out of prisons are recommended for improving visitation experiences.
