Friends Fran and Claire talk about their experience of adopting children with Down's syndrome through Barnardo's.
Before adopting they had been involved with children and young people with special needs – Fran taught at a local special school, and Claire had experience as a carer for children with special educational needs.
They also provided respite and emergency foster care through Barnardo's – they enjoyed this, but 'at the end you always have to hand the children back and we just wanted to give a bit more' says Claire.
As caring women, they realised that they wanted children of their own. Barnardo’s helped Fran and Claire to become adopters.
'It was a two way street with Barnardo’s, a working partnership. We got to know the social workers like friends in the end. We can’t imagine ever being without the boys' says Fran.
