Simon and Peter's story

Simon runs marathons for Barnardo's in memory of his father, who was one of our Old Boys

Portrait of Peter Court as a naval officer

Peter Court was born in 1922, to a mum who couldn't look after him on her own. He found himself included in one of our early fostering programmes, the Barnardo's ABO (Auxillary Boarding Out) Scheme, before being adopted by Mr and Mrs Court of Ditchling, Sussex.

Peter spent his whole life in service to others, he served throughout World War II in the Royal Navy, and went on to become a naval officer. After the war, he became a teacher - and then a Headmaster for 21 years. He also ran the Pestalozzi Children's Village for 5 years before retiring. Two children, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren survived Peter - including his youngest son, Simon.

Out of gratitude to the support Barnardo's provided to his dad, Simon has completed two London Marathons, as well as the Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon and the Royal Parks Half Marathon - raising over £20,000 to date.

When he was most vulnerable, Barnardo’s was there for him. Running for Barnardo’s on the streets he was born into creates a connection that’s hard to put into words. The training requires hard work, focus and courage, all qualities he had in abundance. It has helped me to grieve his loss and to celebrate his life. Despite his start in life and perhaps because of it, he made a huge difference to the lives of many, many people.

Simon

We're very grateful for Simon’s support and extremely touched that he has chosen to remember his dad by raising money for our work. Thanks to supporters like him, we can create a better future for some of the most vulnerable children and young people.

Donating in memory of a loved one is a wonderful way to celebrate their life, while helping support future generations. How will you remember the father figures in your life this Father’s Day?
