The Barnardo’s Cymru Policy and Research Unit works to influence policy and practice so that children, young people and families in Wales can access their rights and fulfil their potential.

We involve children, young people and their families as often as we can in our influencing work. Where we can, we put them in direct contact with politicians and policymakers in Wales.

Our current policy priority issues include:

  • family support
  • looked-after children and young people leaving care
  • child sexual abuse and exploitation
  • mental health and wellbeing

We influence policy and practice by:

  • working with and informing the Welsh Government and National Assembly for Wales in relation to policy and legislative development
  • briefing Assembly Members, MPs and other key influencers on children and family issues
  • working with other stakeholders to inform and influence positive change
  • contributing to Barnardo’s four nations campaigns
  • organising external information sharing events
