Policy and influencing in Wales

We have first-hand experience of the issues faced by children and young people across Wales. We use that experience to campaign for change and influence government to achieve better outcomes for more children.

To change lives, we need to change laws

We campaign to raise public awareness of the issues affecting children and young people in Wales and we influence government using our own evidence-based research to make change happen.

Our campaigns and influencing are currently focused on:

Our recent influencing work in the Senedd

  • In May, Barnardo's Wales launched  our report  on the deepening impact of poverty and the cost-of-living crisis on children, young people and families in Wales. In the report, we offered recommendations to the Welsh government for short-, medium-, and long-term measures which could address poverty and the cost-of-living crisis.

  • We pushed for, and gave evidence to, an inquiry into radical reform for care experienced young people and their children.

  • We highlighted the importance of early intervention and prevention services, such as our Baby and Me model, as well as the need for therapeutic mental health support for all care experienced young people.

Our key achievements in 2021-22

  • Barnardo's Wales held focus groups to influence policy on mental health.
  • We gave evidence to an inquiry on care experienced young people and their children and arranged visits for MPs and MSs.
  • We also supported the launch of the #EndingPhysicalPunishment campaign in Wales.
