We know from experience that concerns can often surface in education settings, and these are often where trusted relationships are built and where early action can make the greatest difference to a child’s safety and wellbeing.
We recognise that the Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) guidance plays a vital role in supporting schools and colleges to safeguard children. However, the proposed guidance does not go far enough to promote effective safeguarding practice.
Our responses and recommendations to the proposed changes to the KCSIE have been formulated alongside our practice experts at Barnardo’s SEEN, who support children and young people from African, Asian and Caribbean heritage, the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse (CSA Centre) and National Female Genital Mutilation Centre (FGM Centre). The recommendations are intended to strengthen KCSIE to make sure it is a practical, usable framework which reflects the lived experiences of children and supports consistency and trauma-informed practice, ultimately supporting schools to step in and protect children at the earliest possible opportunity.
