Barnardo’s Cymru welcomes Welsh Government’s draft Child Poverty Strategy launched this week and the action taken to date, including the commitment to universal free school meals for primary school children and the rollout of baby bundles which we have campaigned for.

However, whilst we value the focus on areas including maximising the incomes of families, creating pathways out of poverty and supporting child and family wellbeing, we feel the strategy lacks the detail on how this will be achieved.

We are pleased that children and young people’s voices have been central to development of the strategy as well as the commitment to continue this engagement. However, we are disappointed that the opportunity has not been taken to be far more ambitious in support of the children and families who need it most, as Barnardo’s Cymru set out in our recent briefing on the deepening impact of poverty and the cost-of-living crisis on children, young people and families in Wales.
