A group of MPs have suggested that the government implement free bus travel for young people aged 22 and under.

Lynn Perry, Chief Executive of Barnardo's, said:

"We strongly support the Transport Select Committee's recommendation for free bus passes for under-22s. Having access to free travel can have a positive and powerful impact on so many areas of young people’s lives, helping them to take up opportunities that might otherwise be unable to access.

Young people involved in a free travel pilot scheme in Cornwall in 2023 said they felt more empowered to take up employment and education opportunities, were more able to attend medical appointments, and had greater choice in where to shop for food. Whilst free bus passes for young people requires investment, the longer-term benefits of increased employment and improved mental health and wellbeing cannot be ignored.

For many young people, travel can feel like a luxury. But it’s also essential. We urge the government to seriously consider this recommendation.”
