Barnardo's responds to Alan Milburn's latest report, which reveals that one in six 16 to 24-year-olds are set to be not in employment, education or training (NEET) by 2031.
Lynn Perry, chief executive of Barnardo’s, said:
“This report must be a wake-up call. We are on the brink of losing a generation, with nearly a million young people locked out of work or education. Cutting welfare support will not be the solution.
“At Barnardo’s, we see every day that issues like mental health challenges, poverty, disability and experience of growing up in care are holding young people back and limiting their life chances. These issues create long-term consequences for their health, wellbeing and future.
“We know targeted, wraparound support works. Through our services, Barnardo’s combines support with challenges such as mental health and housing, with practical skills development and work experience to help young people successfully move into education and employment.
“The Government must invest in tailored support that helps young people overcome barriers and stay in work. This should include early intervention programmes and embedded mental health support, alongside incentives for employers to provide meaningful placements and opportunities to young people. If we fail to act now, we risk writing off the potential of a generation of young people who deserve the chance to thrive.”
