Lynn Perry said: “The Children’s Wellbeing & Schools Act is an important step forward for children and young people, especially those who rely on support from the care system.
"Far too many children who grew up in care told us how they felt unprepared and unsupported when they became adults – without a support network to help.
"That’s why we have long called for stronger, more consistent support for care leavers – no matter where they live – and we’re delighted to see many of these changes reflected in this new law. The new duties on local authorities, alongside improvements to housing, financial education and access to health services, will help make sure they are not left to navigate their transition into adulthood alone.
"We now need to make sure that all children in and leaving care can benefit from the child centred approach that this Act champions, and we will also continue to campaign for a national offer for care leavers, so that every young person - no matter who they are - can access the support they need to build a safer, happier, healthier and more hopeful future."
