Foster parents holding siblings

Fostering brothers and sisters

Are you thinking of fostering siblings? You can give brothers and sisters a happy childhood together.

For some families, growing up together isn’t guaranteed. That’s why more foster carers like you are needed to ensure that the best match is available when siblings need a loving family.

We welcome foster carers from all walks of life, and all backgrounds. Single or a couple, straight or LGBTQ+, disabled, a homeowner or renting, or whatever your religious or cultural background is, we believe you can foster and are here to support you every step of the way.

Why foster siblings

The key benefit is that siblings are there for each other at what can be a very difficult time. Keeping them together makes them feel safer, offers each child an extra layer of support and makes them feel less isolated.

Knowing that they will not be apart from their siblings provides an important sense of continuity and belonging, and has shown to have a very positive effect on their outcomes in later life.

Requirements

You can foster sibling groups if you already have a child in care or an existing child born into your family. If you have the space, time and commitment to foster brothers and sisters, we’d love to hear from you.

We do require that every child over the age of three has his or her own bedroom. There are a few exceptions e.g. if the room is large enough for bunk beds or two single beds to be set up for siblings. Then it might be possible for siblings to share a bedroom. In some cases, sharing a bedroom can provide comfort and security to the foster siblings who have been taken from their usual home and now find themselves in an unknown situation.

There are a few other fostering requirements, please do check them out.

In every case, each fostering placement will be carefully evaluated before the children are placed. The full fostering process, from getting in touch to matching you with the right child/ren is explained here.
