Barnardo's response to Munro Review: "Child protection is everybody's business"

Release Date: 10 May 2011

In response to the Munro Review, Barnardo's chief executive Anne Marie Carrie says:

The Munro Review’s recommendations to place children’s best interests at the heart of the system and to shift away from process-driven practice are exactly what Barnardo’s was hoping to see.

"However in responding to the review, the Government must prioritise protecting and safeguarding children of all ages from infants through to teenagers. They must ensure that reforms are not compromised by pressures on resources combined with the rising numbers of children in care or children being identified as 'at risk'.

"Keeping children safe must be a shared responsibility, and the Government needs to do more to address how we make child protection and safeguarding everybody’s business. The message must be clear to everyone - doctors, teachers, parents, neighbours and the community alike: don't look the other way if you suspect a child may be 'at risk'."
