Frequently asked questions
About the Barnardo's Big Toddle
What is the Barnardo's Big Toddle?
It’s a little sponsored walk for little people. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Big Toddle is the UK's biggest fundraiser for under 5s. Anyone can organise a Toddle - nurseries, playgroups, childminders, other children’s groups, parents or guardians. Thousands of Toddles are organised every year to raise money to help the UK’s most vulnerable children. If you’re not able to arrange one yourself there are usually a few public events that anybody can come along to.
Who is the Big Toddle for?
The Big Toddle is an ideal activity for nurseries, playgroups, childminders and other children’s groups – it’s easy to organise and links perfectly with the EYFS framework. It’s also great fun for parents or guardians to organise a Big Toddle for their under 5s with family and friends. You’ll get everything you need when you register.
How far is the walk?
Most groups find around half a mile is about right for young children but you can choose whatever distance you think is most suitable for your little ones.
When does it take place?
Most people organising their own Big Toddles do so during Toddle Week, 19 – 25 June, but you can hold your event at another time if that’s more convenient.
I can’t Toddle during Toddle Week, can I still take part?
Of course! We are more than happy for you to hold your Toddle at another time instead – just let us know when you are planning your event.
What is the money raised spent on?
Barnardo’s supports 248,000 children, young people, families and carers every year and Big Toddles help fund hundreds of Barnardo's projects and services all over the UK. Learn more about some of the children we’ve helped.
My child is too young to walk - can they still Toddle?
Yes, lots of people have children of mixed ages and abilities at their Toddles and the younger ones can still be part of the fun from their pushchairs!
Planning your Big Toddle
What will happen once we have registered?
You will get instant access to your free fundraising kit, which provides everything you need for a super fun and successful Big Toddle. Look out for extra helpful tips and ideas via email too as you count down to your Toddle.
What is the Big Toddle fundraising kit and when will we receive it?
As soon as you register, you will be able to download your free fundraising kit which includes all the resources you need to organise a fun and successful Big Toddle with ease, from posters and certificates to fun, educational activities.
Where can I get more sponsorship forms?
This year’s materials, including sponsorship forms, can all be found online once you’ve registered, so you can easily print off as many materials as you need or photocopy extras. You will also be able to purchase medals and Teletubbies goodies online soon to make your Big Toddle extra special.
How do we fundraise online?
It’s quick and easy to set up your JustGiving page, whether you are organising your own event, or are the parent/guardian of a child taking part in a Big Toddle at nursery. We simply ask that you check this handy guide and ensure you include your group’s name when setting up your fundraising page so we know who to thank for the money you raise. Once the donations are on your page, they will come straight to Barnardo’s so you won’t need to do anything else.
Do you have any ideas about how to make our Big Toddle extra special?
Yes, there are lots of ways to make your Toddle even bigger and better. Our top tips are the perfect starting point – how about a bright bake sale or a colourful Teletubbies picnic after your walk?
Will my own Big Toddle be covered by Barnardo's insurance?
Barnardo’s is unable to provide insurance for supporter-organised Toddles because we are not responsible for the organisation of your day. As we cannot monitor the health and safety provisions you make, no responsibility shall attach to Barnardo’s for any injury, accident, loss or damage. For guidance on matters relating to safeguarding or protecting children, please refer to either your organisational safeguarding procedures or your local safeguarding board. Please remember that you must check you are Toddling somewhere safe for young children, and ensure children are accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
How do we pay in the money we raise?
Will we receive acknowledgement that we have paid the money in?
Yes - every penny raised is important to us so we always aim to send you a thank you letter as efficiently as possible. We send these out in July, September, November and January. Please rest assured that we are very grateful even if we cannot acknowledge your donation straight away. You can write your fundraising total on the certificate in your fundraising kit and display this proudly on your wall even if you have not yet received your letter. We encourage you to pay in a single instalment if possible.
How can I get a giro to pay my fundraising in at the bank?
You can request a giro by emailing email@example.com or calling 0800 008 7005. Please tell us your reference number (which starts with ORN or SRN) when doing so – you’ll find this on Big Toddle correspondences such as letters or emails.
