Barnardo's expertise

Embedded in local communities across the UK, last year our 1000+ projects worked with over 301,100 of the UK’s most vulnerable children, young people and their families. Our collective expertise gained from 150 years of frontline work helps us to campaign and influence policy-makers. This ensures that children’s voices are heard in the decisions and legislation that will affect their lives. Our innovative services are constantly evolving to tackle emerging social issues. This means Barnardo’s will always be there for those children who are easy to ignore.

Barnardo’s was founded in 1867 in the East End of London, when Dr Thomas Barnardo pledged never to turn away a child in need of his help. At the time of his death in 1905, he had established 96 homes caring for more than 8,500 children.

Our expertise has been built up over 150 years of working with children and we have evolved this knowledge and the way we support children, to respond to contemporary issues faced by modern families.

While Barnardo’s homes are now a part of history, we now have 900 innovative services working closely with children to tackle some of modern society’s most harrowing issues for young people.

Bruce Oldfield

“As someone who was raised in care, I know the difference it makes having someone who believes in you when you are starting out in the world. Barnardo’s provides that belief for thousands of young people each year. Working closely with Barnardo’s has been an immensely rewarding experience for me. I have been consistently impressed by the passion, professionalism and dedication of this organisation.”

- Bruce Oldfield OBE, Barnardo’s Vice President

Barnardo’s is at the forefront of the charity sector in terms of the impact we make. Our work has undergone rigorous analysis from impartial external organisations, such as New Philanthropy Capital (NPC), a think tank specialising in social impact in the charity sector.

In 2009, NPC conducted a Charity Assessment of Barnardo’s. We received a rating of good or excellent in all categories. NPC praised Barnardo’s “significant influence with government” and noted that the Barnardo’s services they visited were “of the highest standard and often superior to similar services from other providers."

“By giving to Barnardo’s, donors can make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children.”
- NPC’s Charity Assessment of Barnardo’s, 2009

At Barnardo’s, we pride ourselves on efficient working to ensure that the most money possible is spent directly on our work with young people.

When supporting Barnardo’s, you can be confident that your donation will be invested effectively and efficiently to make the biggest impact on the lives of young people.
