Leah's Story

Leah* started caring for her mum, who suffers from a chronic pain disorder, when she was just six years old.

Her responsibilities increased five years later, when her father fell seriously ill with a heart condition. By the age of 12, Leah could cook a full roast dinner unsupervised.

Leah talks to us about how her past is inspiring her future as a Barnardo’s apprentice.

Barnardo's: Did you realise you were living a very different life to many other children?

Leah: I just thought it was what every child did to help their parents around the house.

As my mum and dad’s illnesses got worse, my caring role increased and I was struggling to get homework done and revise. Everything got heavier on my shoulders.

Barnardo's: How have your experiences as a young carer led you to becoming a Barnardo’s apprentice?

Leah: I’ve never been ashamed to be a carer. I think it’s something to be proud of. I love my mum and I’m happy to care for her, and although it can be hard and sometimes you do miss out on things, it’s made me the person I am today. I feel like my mum and dad have given me a fantastic opportunity - I wouldn’t be in the role of an apprentice now and I certainly wouldn’t have the maturity level I have now if it wasn’t for caring for my parents from such a young age.

Barnardo's: How does it feel to be starting your apprenticeship with Barnardo’s?

Leah: My experience means I can empathise with the young people we work with and give the team an insight into life from a young carer’s perspective. I understand first-hand the importance for young carers to be properly supported in schools, at home and in all areas of their life, as caring can have such a huge impact on a young person’s mental health.

I’m thrilled to now be working for the team that supported me. I hope we can reach lots more young carers out there who are hidden and get them the support they need.

Barnardo’s specialist case workers understand the complex issues facing young carers, and work with families to provide advice and emotional support. Thanks to your belief in children, more young carers like Leah will get the support they need to thrive. We’re delighted to have Leah on the team!
