Volunteer with children, young people and families
Barnardo’s has around 960 projects across the UK working with more than 240,000 children, young people and their families each year. Many of our projects rely on volunteers to run their activities and benefit hugely from the personal and life experiences that a volunteer bring.
Barnardo’s projects cover a vast range of issues:
- Playschemes for deprived areas
- Young carers
- Fostering and adoption
- Sexual exploitation
- Leaving local authority care
Activities undertaken by volunteers include befriending and mentoring, helping to run playschemes and day trips and acting as advocates. Depending on what services Barnardo's offers locally to you, your volunteering could involve supporting parents, children, young people or a family.
Volunteering with children and young people can be rewarding, challenging and fun. One thing is for sure, it is never dull!
What one of our Hear 4U volunteers had to say
"I volunteer as a Children’s and young peoples advocate for Barnardo's Hear 4U service. I advocate for children who are' looked after, accommodated or are on the child protection register, helping them to express their views to Children's Panels at Hearings. Sometimes I'm there to help them to speak for themselves and sometimes to speak on their behalf, always making sure they have a voice in the process. This is the most satisfying thing I have ever done, I feel like I'm doing something useful to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children. I'm also a full time student and I have found that volunteering has enabled me to gain experience that will help me with my course, and give me skills that will help me to succeed in my career choices"
