Barnardo's welcomes the scrapping of the 'same roof rule' for abuse victims

Barnardo's welcomes news that the Government is amending the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme to scrap the ‘same roof rule’ which meant that survivors of abuse could not receive compensation if they lived with their abuser.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed Khan said:

“We are pleased that the government has scrapped the cruel and illogical ‘same roof rule’ which Barnardo’s has long campaigned for. Survivors, including those who suffered horrific abuse as children, who have been unable to claim compensation for four decades will finally get the compensation they so rightly deserve.

“This is a welcome change, however, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS) is still failing victims. Unfair rules deny victims compensation, such as those that refuse pay-outs to people with unspent convictions, including children drawn into crime as victims of child sexual abuse and exploitation gangs. The Government must urgently rewrite the CICS guidance to make it fit for purpose.”
