In a speech today the Home Secretary Sajid Javid has spoken about what needs to happen to stop the bloodshed on Britain's streets.
Barnardo's is pleased the Government is taking the lead on this important issue.
Chief Executive Javed Khan said:
“Serious youth violence has now become a crisis - there's no other way of talking about it.
“To tackle this growing scourge, we must address the ‘poverty of hope’ felt by too many children and young people across the country, who see little or no chance of a positive future. Caught in a vicious cycle, they carry knives because they don’t feel safe.
“We welcome the Government’s leadership on this issue. Solutions can only be found if ministers, police, education, local authorities and charities work hand in hand with communities and local young people to provide the support, love and hope they need, to turn their lives around.”
The Home Secretary also challenged businesses to help and support crime prevention.
In response, Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed Khan said:
“We welcome the Government’s focus on early intervention and calls on business to take action.
“We know through our experience that many children are vulnerable to being coerced into criminal activity, so prevention should focus on keeping children safe from this form of exploitation.
“And to tackle this growing scourge effectively, we must address the root causes - the ‘poverty of hope’ felt by too many children and young people across the country, who see little or no chance of a positive future."
