Barnardo's has issued the statement below regarding the Education Policy Institute's report about rejected referrals to children’s mental health services.

Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed Khan said:

“This report provides further evidence that too many children are waiting far too long for vital mental health services.

“It’s extremely concerning that a quarter of children who are referred to specialist mental health services are turned away. These are some of the most vulnerable children in our society, who have often self-harmed, experienced abuse or have conditions such as eating disorders.

“We urgently need a new approach to tackling the crisis in children’s mental health – with more investment in specialist services, early intervention programmes in every school, and an end to the ‘cliff edge’ at age 18.”
