Vintage chic in Cheadle receives national award

Release Date: 18 Jul 2017

A vintage charity store in Cheadle has been awarded ‘Specialist Shop of the Year’ at a national retail awards event.

The Barnardo’s vintage store on Cheadle High Street picked up the prestigious award at the recent Charity Retail Association Awards 2017.

The store, which is Barnardo’s only specialist vintage shop in the UK, stocks a large range of clothing, accessories and kitsch homeware, from wedding dresses and vinyls, to antique crockery and retro furniture.

The shop boasts more than 6,000 devoted followers on its Instagram page, many of whom ask to reserve items they have seen online, before travelling for miles to come and collect them. Around 40% of the shop’s custom is generated in this way.

The popular store also receives regular requests to provide clothing for television productions, with items from their wardrobe recently featuring on the series ‘Tina and Bobby’, as well as an upcoming drama about Princess Diana.

Gemma Burgess, Store Manager and guru of all things vintage, started working at the Barnardo’s store three years ago.

Gemma said:

“We are absolutely delighted that our shop has been awarded in this way and recognised on a national platform. I built on the concept of the original store when I arrived in 2014 and since then, my staff and I have worked hard to turn the shop into a vintage-enthusiast’s dream, brimming with treasures to be discovered.

“Shoppers can journey through our themed rooms including a 50s style kitchen, before perusing mum and dad’s vinyl collection and rifling through the kids bedroom filled with retro toys. Even the fitting rooms are styled as a teenager’s bedroom, adorned with teen idols and pin ups from our customers’ youth.

“As well as our extensive range of vintage clothing and items for sale, we also put on events such as vintage shopping evenings, fashion shows and birthday parties.”

A recent event at the store raised £400 in three hours and the next date for shoppers to add to their diaries will be a late night shopping event from 6pm on Friday 4 August 2017.

The Charity Retail Association (CRA) named the Barnardo’s shop as ‘Specialist Shop of the Year’ at their tenth national awards ceremony.

Chief Executive Robin Osterley, of the CRA, said:

“In contrast to the vintage appearance, the shop has a very modern approach to marketing. The success of their social media strategy is evident not only in an increased number of volunteers, but in increased store sales which is driven by their knowledge and passion.”

Robin adds:

“Thrifting has become a pastime for many groups of people who love to scour vintage shops with friends looking for unique fashion or kitsch homeware.”

The Barnardo’s vintage store is located at 76 High Street, Cheadle, SK8 1AE, and is nestled amongst small, independent family-run businesses including a butcher, baker, greengrocer and a haberdashery, which enhances the sense of nostalgia it aims to create for its customers.

The shop is currently looking for volunteers to join the team and flexible hours are available.
