Tragic lack of support for children with mental health disorders says Barnardo's

Release Date: 22 Nov 2018

New figures from NHS Digital show an ongoing problem in meeting the needs of children and young people's mental health.

Responding to the new data, head of Barnardo’s Javed Khan said:

These figures are truly shocking, and confirm that we’re no longer heading for a mental health crisis – we’re already there.

It’s clear that mental health problems are increasing: one in eight 5-19 year olds now have a mental health disorder, compared with one in ten in 2004. For some children problems start really early, with 5% of 2-4 year olds affected, which underlines the need for much better prevention and early intervention.

This new research also sheds light on the tragic lack of support. One in four children with a mental health disorder have no contact with professionals. This simply isn’t good enough.

In response to this growing unmet need, it’s vital that a proportion of the £20.5billion earmarked for the NHS long term plan is spent on children’s mental health
