Tony Cohen to retire as Barnardo’s chair of trustees

Release Date: 23 Jan 2018

Tony Cohen is to retire as Chair of the Board of Trustees at Barnardo's, the UK's biggest children's charity announced today.

Tony has served on Barnardo's Board as a trustee for over six years and as Chair for the past four years.

He said today that he will be spending more time in the United States in future for family reasons and so he won’t be able to devote sufficient time to continue leading the Barnardo's Board.

Speaking today, he said:

Barnardo's has an extraordinary and unique impact on helping improve the life chances of some of the UK's most vulnerable children, young people and their families. It has been a huge privilege for me and very humbling to help Barnardo's work, first as a trustee and then as Chair.

He added:

Barnardo’s is in very good shape to build on its reputation for helping young people transform their lives through our hundreds of services across the UK. The charity has a very experienced Board of trustees, an excellent CEO in Javed Khan and a very strong executive team. We are already seeing the results of our ambitious new ten year corporate strategy – last year Barnardo’s supported over 272,000 vulnerable children, young people, parents and carers, 20% higher than three years ago. My priority now is to ensure a smooth transition to my successor.

The search for Barnardo's next Chair of Trustees is being led by Barnardo's Deputy Chair of Trustees Amanda Ellingworth.

She said today:

Tony Cohen has been a very committed Chair of Barnardo's, and leaves a strong legacy. He has brought clear strategic focus, which means that while the tough economic backdrop brings challenges for all charities, Barnardo’s is well placed to continue on a strong course. Tony will be much missed.

Javed Khan, Chief Executive of Barnardo's said today:

We have greatly valued Tony’s wise counsel and support. He has made an exceptional leadership contribution for which we shall always be grateful. He has developed and led a Board of trustees that is highly committed to Barnardo's work and its future.

Barnardo's is working with Davidson and Partners to recruit the new Chair of Trustees. Further details here -
