Barnardo's welcomes Government annoucement of new funding to help children of alcohol-dependent parents

Release Date: 23 Apr 2018

Barnardo’s has welcomed new Government plans to offer children of alcoholic parents quick access to support and advice.

An estimated 200,000 children in England live with alcohol-dependent parents. The measures unveiled by the Government include fast access to mental health services and support for children and their families where there is a dependent drinker.

There is also funding to identify and support children who are at risk more quickly.

The plans will receive £6 million in joint funding from the Department of Health and Social Care and Department for Work and Pensions.

Javed Khan, Barnardo’s Chief Executive, said:

Barnardo's has long been calling for adequate investment in early intervention and prevention to address issues such as these from escalating and we welcome the government’s response to this issue.

We urge the Government to ensure that the additional funding goes towards early help, including parenting support, to try and reduce the numbers of children going into care. Families need early support to build the resilience of parents and children as well as timely support for more serious problems.

We know that three children in every classroom have a diagnosable mental health disorder and there is an urgency to give priority support to parents and children with mental health issues.
