Barnardo's backs calls for social media companies to have a 'duty of care' for children

Release Date: 31 Jan 2019

Barnardo's backs calls for social media companies to have a 'duty of care' so children are better protected online.

Javed Khan, Barnardo's Chief Executive, said:

Barnardo’s supports calls for the Government to introduce a new legal duty on internet companies to keep children safe online.

Every day, our 1000+ frontline services support children who have experienced harm online – from cyber-bullying, to gaming addiction, to grooming.

That’s why we are backing proposals, from a cross-party group of MPs, for a formal “duty of care” towards children using the internet. This would make companies responsible for ensuring children can learn, play and socialise safely in the digital world.

It’s what we expect offline, and we expect it online too.
