Barnardo's responds to the household below average income statistics

Release Date: 29 Jun 2016

The Department for Work & Pensions latest poverty figures show the number of children in relative low income families in the UK has increased from 3.7m to 3.9 million.

Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan said:

Nearly 4 million children are living in poverty in the UK today. It’s shameful that in the fifth richest nation in the world 200,000 more children were pushed into poverty in the last year.

It is essential the fallout of the EU referendum doesn’t detract from focusing on important work to improve children’s lives, such as the Government’s long-anticipated strategy for improving children’s life chances.
