Barkingside pub brings in 6,000 for Barnardo’s in year of fundraising

Release Date: 23 Jan 2017

The team who took over a Barkingside pub one year ago have raised nearly 6,000 for Barnardo’s in an amazing 12 months of fundraising.

Matthew and Karl todd at Chequers pub in Barkingside

Chequers, just across the road from the children’s charity’s headquarters in Barkingside High Street, collected £5,750 in 2016 by hosting regular events including sing-along nights, all-day band sessions, quiz nights and even a murder mystery.

One of the biggest fundraisers of last year was the Barnardo’s Has Got Talent contest, showcasing the skills of Barnardo’s staff, which is set to return on Thursday, January 26 with performances by the Barnardo’s Staff Choir and Dr B’s live band.

And Matthew Todd, 38, Director of the pub’s owners Opus Bars, even braved heavy fog to climb the three highest mountains in the Lake District over the course of a continuous three-day hike, raising £623 towards the total.

Matthew said:

It nearly broke me. There was one point when I was climbing up Helvellyn on the second day while it was getting dark, and I thought I couldn’t make it until my friend Tom, who was walking with me, told me we were camping by the next fence.

The support that we’ve received from Barnardo’s staff since we opened has been fantastic, so it was always going to be our charity of choice.

Matthew’s nephew, Karl, 30, who works as Bar Manager at Chequers, also caught the fundraising bug after meeting his

partner, Lucy Clements, who works for the children’s charity as Community Fundraising Manager for London.

Karl said:

I met Lucy at a staff party just over a year ago, and our passion for fundraising brought us together. I love it – two days after we met we were shaking tins and collecting money for Barnardo’s. Being so close to the charity, in the same place that Thomas Barnardo was operating all that time ago, it makes sense to do everything we can to show our support.

Lynn Gradwell, Director of Barnardo’s in London, said:

The Chequers team have done an incredible job of fundraising over the last year. They’ve really pulled out all the stops and are a real asset to Barnardo’s and the Barkingside community. I’d like them to thank them for everything they’ve done and wish them ongoing success for 2017.
