Fostering in North East England

We believe safe and loving foster care is crucial to giving a child the stability they so desperately need and deserve during a hugely challenging time in their life.

By fostering, you can help to transform the lives of vulnerable young people in the North East. And with Barnardo's training and support you won't have to do it alone.

“One of the most memorable things for me was when one of our first foster children asked me to give her away. I was so proud and thought it was lovely to help her arrange her wedding.” Norman, foster carer for 30 years

Children in need of fostering

There are a large number of teenagers who need fostering in the North East – both boys and girls. By helping young people to learn practical skills for their everyday life, you can give them the tools to succeed in the future.

Siblings groups

1 in 3 children are separated from their siblings when placed in foster care. If you can keep siblings together, we will support them, stand up for them and help you to bring out the best in each child you care for.

Children with challenging behaviours

Children in care may have been through very difficult experiences and each child will cope with past traumas in his or her own way. To give them the support they deserve, we need foster carers in the North East who can understand and work through demanding behaviours.

Children with physical and/or learning disabilities

We are looking for foster carers who can help meet the needs of children with disabilities.

Children with sexually harmful behaviour

Children who have been sexually abused may not understand that what happened to them is wrong. We need foster carers who can provide secure environments, helping children to be the best that they can be.

Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) children

We need foster carers to provide loving homes to children, helping each child to thrive in their new environment. You can make a huge difference to children in care from African, Caribbean, Asian and mixed ethnicities.

Parent and child

Some of the young people in care in the North East have young children of their own and need support to develop the parenting skills that will help them to stay together as a family. Our foster carers can provide invaluable care at this crucial time.

“It’s the hardest job you’ll ever do but the rewards outweigh the difficult times.” - Liz, foster carer

Types of foster placements
