Rez's story

Rez is a young person who was looked after by Katie, a foster carer in Kent.

I was fostered by Katie and her family from the age of 14 up until 20 and it was incredible. It is hard to describe but I was really made to feel like part of the family. They welcomed me into their home and Katie’s family became my family. I started off a stranger and went on to feel like I was living in my own home.

I was involved in all family celebrations and gatherings with extended family and they were always there for me whenever I needed any help or support. Even now, at 26, I am always in touch with them and go to visit.

Katie had a daughter and a son and they treated me like a brother. I remember when I first started my new school they looked after me and showed me what to do and where to go.

I think having good communication and being open minded is really important for anyone who is thinking about being a foster carer. From day one I have been involved and made to feel like part of the family and that is the best thing a foster carer can do.
