The start of a new year is often a time we look to improve ourselves, but instead of trying to give up chocolate again, why not better your life as well as the lives of others, by volunteering, donating, or fundraising with Barnardo’s in 2022?

There are so many ways that you can get involved, whether you have a few hours spare a week, want to organise a one-off fundraising event or simply want to donate to one of our shops, we have an opportunity to suit you. The most important part? You will be helping to change the lives of vulnerable children and young people across the UK.

Here are five ideas to inspire you...

 1. Donate your unsuitable gifts

Did Santa not get it quite right this year? Perhaps you received one too many bubble bath gift sets, the same boxset as last year, or possibly a Christmas jumper just one size too big?

Whilst Christmas gifts are a wonderful gesture, for many the reality doesn’t always live up to expectation. Instead of putting those unsuitable gifts in the back of a cupboard to gather dust, why don’t you donate them to your local Barnardo’s store?

 2.Get active

Join #TeamBarnardos and challenge yourself in 2022 by getting active and raising money.

Why not sign up to the Cardiff Half Marathon this March for only £1? This predominantly flat route will take you past all the city’s sights such as Cardiff Castle and the stadium. You’ll also receive a high-performance Barnardo’s running vest, post-race refreshments and a massage as a thank you for raising money for vulnerable children across the UK.

You can explore our large selection of running events on our website.
To get you going in the meantime, we have partnered with Running With Us to create personalised training guides for 5k runs, treks, half marathons and full marathons. You can download beginner, improver, and advanced guides to best suit you.

3. Raise money together

Want to bring your community together to raise money for a great cause? Here’s one for you: raise money in your school or university or organise a fundraiser at your workplace

From bake sales to auctions and raffles, you will get a free fundraising pack to get you started on your fundraising journey. This is a great way to raise awareness of the amazing work Barnardo’s does with people you know whilst trying something new and getting creative!

There are also added benefits of fundraising in your workplace:

  • Becoming a Corporate Partner of Barnardo’s means that your business can support the UK’s most vulnerable children and young people while strengthening your brand and meeting your corporate social responsibilities. You can email our corporate partnership team for more information.

  • Match funding means that your company will offer to match the funds you raise during your event, up to a certain amount.

  • You can make a donation of gifts and prizes to contribute to raffles and events. If your organisation can donate any gifts, please email us.
  • Payroll giving allows you to support Barnardo’s via your salary. The donation comes out of your gross pay, so the tax you would have paid on your donation also goes to Barnardo's. Even small, regular donations make a big difference. The scheme is easy to opt in and out of, giving you full control over your giving.

4. Come up with your own fundraising idea

Do you have a creative, unique or fun way you’d like to raise money for Barnardo’s? Raise money with your own fundraising idea. Maybe you have a musical talent like eight-year-old Nelson who played his trumpet around local hospitals to raise money for Barnardo’s.  Or maybe you are great at baking and want to take part in Barnardo’s Big Bake.

5. Volunteer with us

To become a volunteer, all you need is enthusiasm and a desire to help. You can choose how much time you give, and we'll give you all the training and support you need.

Some volunteers set aside two hours a week, others offer us 20. They're all making a vital contribution to our work. We welcome children and young people as volunteers too, but you need to be 14 or over.

Here are some ways you can volunteer with us:

Volunteer in a shop. Over 10,000 shop volunteers support our work by keeping our 700 shops up and running. It's a great way to help vulnerable children, build your skills and meet new people. Job-seeking volunteers regularly report that giving their time at a Barnardo’s retail shop helps improve self-esteem, communication skills, team-working, problem-solving, organisational skills, and numeracy.

Take part in the Duke of Edingburgh with Barnardo’s. Get involved with the world’s leading achievement award for young people.

Volunteer with children. When you volunteer with one of our children's services, you will be helping the UK’s most disadvantaged children and young people in the most direct way possible.

Become a fundraising volunteer. You can make a difference by helping to organise the smooth running of our fundraising activities.

Become an office volunteer. In these roles, you will contribute to the growth of a large children’s charity, while gaining valuable insight into how Barnardo’s delivers services to children and young people across the UK.
