What we do
Homelessness continues to be one of the worst social problems in Britain for young people. It is also a problem hidden from the public. For every young homeless person on the streets, there are many more sleeping rough on friends' floors, 'sofa surfing', staying in temporary hostels or bed and breakfast accommodation.
Barnardo's has 10 services specifically for young people who are homeless, offering advice and support in accessing suitable accommodation and in maintaining tenancies.
Youthbase service:
- provides young people at risk temporary accommodation in supported lodgings within the local community
- is offered to young people aged between 16 and 21, with a focus on those young people who are in critical need
- offers 6 week temporary accommodation which may be with a family, a couple or a single person in a house, flat or bungalow
- recruits, trains and supports hosts
- welcomes enquiries and referrals from young people and other agencies. For contact details see contact us.
Hosts are people who:
- are approved by an independent panel
- have a spare, reasonably sized room in their home
- can offer a safe, comfortable environment to young people
- can provide breakfast and evening meals
- can offer a minimum of six weeks commitment to each young person
- can offer minimal support and guidance to each young person
- are willing to share their home
- enjoy the company of young people.
If you are interested in becoming a host we can offer you:
- support e.g. 24 hour on call, regular opportunities to meet up with other hosts
- a guaranteed monthly payment for support, board and lodgings
- training and supervision.
