Barnardo's Youth Involvement Project

Barnardo's Youth Involvement Project is an intervention service working with children and families affected by the impact of parental substance use. We support the young people aged 8-15 who have emerging emotional and behavioural needs. We support our families to build on the emotional resilience of each child and young person, we promote positive mental health and social inclusion.

Our key objectives are:

  • to engage with children and young people assessed as being at risk from the impact of parental substance use.
  • to strengthen protective factors associated with resilience and reduce risk factors
  • to reduce progression of challenging behaviour in 8-15 year olds
  • to reduce the impact of parental substance misuse on children.
  • to increase the confidence and skills of parents.
  • to create opportunities for young people to influence local and national decision making structures
  • to reduce the numbers of young people being accommodated as a result of problematic parental substance misuse.
