Parent prisoners and their families

Receiving a prison sentence can be a distressing and traumatic experience – made even more difficult if you are leaving a family on the outside. For families it often feels like they are the forgotten victims. They have done nothing wrong yet they are being punished too.

Barnardo’s has developed a range of targeted services that we believe can make a real and lasting difference to the lives of prisoners, their families and, in particular, their children.

  • Parenting programmes for male and female prisoners concentrate on staying in touch with family and managing the parental role whilst in prison.
  • Parenting  programme for partners of prisoners.
  • Advice and support to the children of prisoners, including one-to-one work.
  • Family learning in prisons.

Following a parenting programme delivered by Barnardo’s Liverpool Parenting Matters service at Risly prison, 88% of participants said they are now more aware of the importance of keeping in touch with their children whilst in prison.

Our work in North West prisons is already achieving positive results, and fits clearly into the Children and Families Pathway contributing to the regional activity plan for re-offending.

Barnardo’s is keen to form partnerships with local prisons to deliver a children and family service. To find out more about this service please contact the development team on 0151 488 1100.
