Case study
Barnardo’s Liverpool Parenting Matters provides support and parenting programmes to families whose children are at risk of offending – or who are involved in the youth justice system.
Julie’s story
Julie had just received a 12 month parenting order as her ten year old son Stephen, who has additional learning needs, had not attended school in almost a year. The educational and emotional support provided by the service enabled Stephen to initially return to school on a part-time basis.
Meanwhile, regular multi-agency meetings were held, and Julie was encouraged to become more involved with her son’s educational and emotional development. An application for a special educational needs assessment was made and resulted in Stephen receiving twenty five hours of weekly support. A referral was also made to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service to deal with Stephen’s sometimes aggressive behaviour.
Julie joined one of the service’s parenting programmes to equip her with new methods of discipline, which complement the approach at school. Stephen has now returned to school on a part time basis and his attendance is excellent.
"People at Barnardo's took the time to understand what I wanted for myself and my son- a good future. They believed in both of us and knew we could do it." Julie
Outcome
Of families referred to Barnardo's Liverpool Parenting Matters last year, 78% of children improved their school attendance to between 81 and 100%.
