Current Barnardo’s services in Cheshire

Case Study

The Wider Horizon project aims to promote the inclusion of disabled children and young people to enable them to access local social and leisure activities.

A grandmother rang Wider Horizons on behalf of her daughter whose son has additional needs. The daughter was upset as her son didn’t get the support he needed. Her daughter had been waiting for a long time for various appointments which had been promised but not materialised. She didn’t know what to do next.

Action

The project contacted Portage and although they knew of the boy they couldn’t explain the long delay. They ensured he was brought to the front of the list of the next multi-agency meeting. This happened the next week and his appointment was made for two weeks later. Portage also contacted school nursery. They put a support worker in to help and monitor the little boy and others in the group who have speech and language difficulties.

The grandmother and mother were liaised with throughout the process. The mother had been researching on the internet and wanted to know more about Makaton. She was loaned some relevant books and resources from Barnardo’s Inclusive Lending Library.

Outcomes

The little boy is now receiving appropriate support in nursery school and has had relevant medical appointments. The mother is also receiving home visits from a senior nursery nurse.

The Grandmother rang a few days later to thank us for “giving her daughter back”. She felt we’d helped a lot and that her daughter ‘had a spring in her step again’ and really felt things were moving in a positive way for her son.
