Campaigning for children - policy and research unit

The aim of our policy and research unit is to promote children’s rights and bring about positive change for children, young people and their families in Northern Ireland.

We do this through:

  • promoting the experience and practice of Barnardo’s projects
  • liaison with NI assembly ministers and civil servants
  • briefing MLAs, MPs, MEPs on children and family matters
  • working in collaboration with other groups engaged in children and young peoples’ issues in NI
  • contributing to the development of Barnardo’s four nations campaigns as well as organising conferences and seminars.

missing children pp briefing launch

A joint report from Barnardo's NI and the NSPCC NI has emphasised the need for ongoing coordination between the agencies responsible for separated and trafficked children in Northern Ireland. The policy and practice paper 'Separated children and child trafficking in Northern Ireland' was launched on Wednesday 21st September 2011 at Malone House, Barnetts Demesne, Belfast.  The paper highlighted the need for professional vigilance over a problem which, while currently small in number is complex and likely to grow.

Mary Anne Webb said "The study found there are around ten separated children in Northern Ireland, and there has been one confirmed case of child trafficking to date.  However, there is a clear need for a centralised system to accurately gather statistical data.  It is also important that the child trafficking guidance is kept updated in line with changing policy and practice."
