Barnardo's and royalty

Diana Princess of Wales

Princess Diana

When Diana Princess of Wales became President of Barnardo's in 1984 a whole new era of Royal involvement began. From her first visit to a Barnardo's service on November 8 1984, until resigning in July 1996 the Princess charmed and delighted everyone she met.

During that time she attended over 110 Barnardo's events including visits to services, gatherings of volunteers, conferences and fundraising events. Her commitment to the Charity was exceptional. She trusted Barnardo's and undertook several 'firsts' with us. The Princess gave her first major speech when the charity dropped 'Dr' from its title and relaunched itself in 1988. She hosted her first business meeting by helping Barnardo's attract corporate sponsorship; and made her first private, unannounced, visit to a foster family.

Many, including those with little interest in the institution of the Royal Family, experienced at first hand the Princess of Wales' strong personal commitment to the most vulnerable people. She had an unwavering ability to form trusting relationships and enormous capacity to understand both that which was within and outside her personal experience.

Royal Mint have launched a range of new commemorative coins in remembrance of Diana Princess of Wales. Find out more here.
