Education

Engaging with education is one of the best ways for children and young people to overcome disadvantage and move forward with aspirations and advantages for adulthood.

But for some children, just turning up to school can be a challenge – for example, those with mental health conditions, young carers and children in care need substantial support to be able to take advantage of educational opportunities.

There are also many young people who would be more motivated to learn in a vocational setting, but are unable to access this option.

Barnardo’s understands the needs of young people who, for various reasons, are unable to fulfil their full potential through mainstream education.

Education facts

  • Just over one third of poorer children (eligible for free school meals) get five good grades at GCSE, compared to nearly two-thirds of other children.
  • Children in care are nearly five times less likely to obtain five or more good grades at GCSE than other children.
  • Children with special educational needs(SEN) are over nine times more likely to be permanently excluded from school than others.

Education projects

More than two-thirds of Barnardo’s services involve education. They include:

  • children’s centres and other early years services
  • alternative provision for young people at risk of exclusion
  • vocational training and work-based learning for 14-19 year olds
  • three schools for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
