Education
Regardless of how hard they’ve worked, or the challenges they’ve overcome, thousands of young people will not be celebrating exam success this week.
Just turning up to school can be a challenge for young people suffering mental health problems, living in an abusive home or for those acting as the main carer for a sick parent or sibling.
There are many young people who would be more motivated to learn in a vocational setting, but are unable to access this option.
Barnardo’s understands the needs of young people who, for various reasons are unable to fulfil their full potential through mainstream education.
- Just over one third of poorer children (eligible for free school meals) get 5 good grades at GCSE, compared to nearly two-thirds of other children
- Children in care are nearly five times less likely to obtain 5 or more good grades at GCSEs than other children
- Children with special educational needs (SEN) are over nine times more likely to be permanently excluded from school than others
More than two-thirds of Barnardo’s services involve education. They include:
- children’s centres and other early years services
- alternative provision for young people at risk of exclusion
- vocational training and work-based learning for 14-19 year olds
- three schools for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
In addition to providing community-based support, Barnardo’s also campaigns on a wider level to improve various aspects of their lives.
