HRH The Duchess of Cornwall was formally announced as Barnardo’s new President at the charity’s Annual General Meeting in October 2007. She succeeded Cherie Booth QC, following the successful completion of Cherie’s second three-year term.

The Duchess wasted no time embarking on a series of visits to see the vital work of Barnardo’s at first hand. She made her first visit in November 2007 to High Close School in Wokingham. She met with staff and young people, as she visited the school’s many facilities and dropped in science, maths and drama lessons.

She has followed this up with a meeting with young carers at Barnardo’s CareFree project in Leicester in February 2008. During her visit the Duchess talked to six families involved with the project, which offers a wide range ofpractical and emotional support services to young carers in Leicestershire.

The Duchess showed her relaxed side when she visited Barnardo’s services in Northern Ireland for the first time in May 2008. During her visit the Duchess enjoyed meeting toddlers at the Windsor Avenue Family Resource Centre in Belfast. She was all smiles, even when two three-year-old boys got a little boisterous during the photo call!

Martin Narey, the former Chief Executive of Barnardo’s said:

We are honoured to have the Duchess as our President and I hope that over the years she will be able to experience some of our vital work with the children across the UK who are coping with poverty, abuse, disability and exploitation. I hope that she will help us in our fight to end child poverty and support our campaign to get people to believe in children and put them at the heart of our society.”
