Our alternative education services work with young people like Rhys, to address underlying educational difficulties and give them the opportunity to re-engage with learning.

The recession is biting hardest on the most disadvantaged communities and the lowest-skilled jobs, so we also provide vocational training to over 2,200 young people in areas such as: construction (find out more about the Hub Construction Skills Centre), hospitality, maintenance, business admin, horticulture, retail and beauty therapy to engage them in the world of work.

Constructing futures – Barnardo’s leads the way

The Hub Construction Skills Centre is an alternative to mainstream education and training, where students aged 14-19 can study a range of courses in electrical installation, plumbing, decorating and carpentry.

The Hub builds on the success of Windermere, a similar project in South London.

Nick, 18 made incredible progress at the centre, winning runner up in the Under 16 Young Builder of the Year category at the national Youthbuild Awards last year.

I can honestly say that attending Windermere changed my life. It was different to school. The teachers treated me like an adult, they encouraged and challenged me, and any time I had needed them to help, they did. I’ve since gone on to College and this year passed Bench Carpentry. After this – who knows? Maybe I’ll own my own property development business. I’d love to. But I do know this, without my time at Windermere, I wouldn’t have dreamed I could do that one day."

With your help Barnardo's supports young people to get the opportunities they need to turn their lives around.

Some of our stats
